Women’s health was barely on the map when I began my career in health communications 28 years ago. Thanks to the stunning explosion of research advances, dedication to improving consumer health literacy, and three decades of tireless advocacy, many more women today are aware of their health risks and wellness needs.
What a groundbreaking time it’s been for health communications. My clients during this period of many medical landmarks have included federal agencies, industry nonprofit and professional organizations, academic medical centers, public health agencies, and health advocacy groups, including:
- National Institutes of Health Office of Research on
Women’s Health - National Council on Patient Information and Education
- JBS International
- The Parsemus Foundation
- HealthyWomen
- The George Washington University Medical Center
- American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists
- American Health Consultants
- Medical Economics
- Merck
- Parkinsonian Foundation of Greater Washington
My experience: Book chapters on women’s health- and wellness topics; web content for medication safety for seniors and teens; employee and alumni newsletter and magazine articles; newspaper features; content for public health clients; and articles for healthcare policy and management newsletters. My favorite challenges are directing editorial teams; liaison with clients and editorial boards; and managing health content that informs and empowers consumers and healthcare professionals.
My environment: I live in Montgomery County, Maryland’s, Agricultural Reserve. I can as easily write about nature, animal behavior, and canine shenanigans as I can about human health. My passions include my hens, canines, and kids; innovative cooking, fishing; and being outdoors. My family, friends, and clients admire my practical approach to the universe.
My education: I earned my master’s degree in secondary English education from The George Washington University, and my bachelor’s degree from Gettysburg College.
My professional affiliations: American Medical Writer’s Association (AMWA), AMWA – MidAtlantic Chapter
